Why does Opera start heavy traffic when starting up to
about:blank?
There is a lot of outbound traffic from Opera to servers of Opera Software.
That traffic is largely unexplained. Questions about it are ignored here.

If that means what it suggests, that would be a serious problem. Serious
as in "I can't ever use Opera again or trust it in any way." Which is a
thought I dread. As in "O noes, my favourite brwoser I have been using for
almost ten years and recommending to everyone and thinking was absolutely
safe and won't call home like cursed IE and tell my secrets to people has
betrayed me!". And also "I'll never again be able to enjoy the amenities
of a browser/e-mail client as comfortable as this".

Dear Opera staff, I don't like to jump to conclusions, but I think an
explanation is in order. Or a correction, whichever.

Check this thread:
http://groups.google.com/group/opera.general/browse_thread/thread/89f97d64b99e9ad2/f300059ec2776358

If you have more domains you're not certain about, search the opera.*
groups first since I've seen this come by a few times already.

Alright, if this is just about initializing search and the like, I'm fine.

However, the main post was about "a lot of outbound traffic from Opera to
servers of Opera Software". That's something else than fetching an icon or
maybe an encryption key from a search engine. I think I'll monitor my own
installation before becoming nervous in public again ...

If you've hit refresh [F-5] during the speed dial page display it will try to
update the icons there and if you kill it during this process it will resume
next start up with lots of net activity.
